Election of Jordan as a Member in the International Economic Council
20 Oct 1992AMMAN – For the first time in history, Jordan is participating as a member of the International Economic and Social Council of the UN, after it was elected as a member of the new board of directors of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). It is the first Arab country to be elected to this council.
The council meetings will begin tomorrow in Geneva, to discuss presentations on mankind as the focus of interest of UN activities.
These meetings are being organized by a committee of NGOs and a conglomerate of NGOs that are characterized by being consultative to the UN’s Economic and Social Council.
The fourteenth IFAC international conference for accountants that was convened in Washington last Monday with the presence of Ms. Barbara Franklin, the US Secretary of Commerce, begain its activities by electing a new board of directors for the IFAC, composed of members from 18 countries. Jordan was the first Arab country to win a seat on this assembly.
Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Chairman of the Arab Society of Certified Accountants (ASCA), was named as a member for the IFAC board of directors, in coordination with ASCA and the Society of Jordanian Auditors, which recently joined the IFAC.
Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh’s participation in the Economic and Social Council meetings is in response to an invitation he received from the council to meet with representatives of the permanent UN delegations and representatives of the consultative NGOs aforementioned, in order to discuss various topics such as dialogue development between governments and NGOs.
