Pan-Arab accounting body gets support

01 Feb 1984
Arab Society of Certified Accountants President Talal Abu-Ghazaleh says the tremendous support being received from various governments in the Arab world indicates that the new Pan-Arab accounting body is both important and needed.

Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh made his remarks at the first council meeting of the Society to be held in the Arab world, which took place in Kuwait late last month. He went on to tell the eight-member council and its special adviser, Association Past President John Small, of the many informal discussions among council members, who represent many different countries and international firms. From these discussions, he had concluded that there continues to be a tremendous need for standardisation and modernisation of audit practices in the Arab world.

‘We continue to look to the West, but there is a critical need to adapt those standards to fit the peculiar needs of our national economies,’ he said.
It was announced at the meeting that Dr. Issam Merei had been appointed secretary-general of the Society. Dr. Merei is currently a senior consultant working on accounting and auditing standards and is a US-qualified certified public accountant. He has held senior positions in the Universities of Texas and Wisconsin, in private industry and in the government sector. The position of London Executive Director has been filled by Ben Strachan, former British ambassador to Algeria. Mr. Strachan has served as an ambassador to Lebanon, the Arab Republic of Yemen, and to Djibouti.
The council also met with H.E. Jassim Al-Marzouk, the Minister of Trade and Industry for Kuwait, and H.E. Abdul Aziz Al Sager, the president of the Kuwaiti Chamber of Commerce and Industry, both of whom expressed their support for the society.
