The Imperative to Revitalize Multilateralism

17 Sep 2024

In a time characterized by worldwide issues never seen before in history, it is extremely important that we revive the idea of working together internationally as soon as possible. I have always supported the idea of multilateralism which is crucial, for creating a stable world economy and promoting sustainable growth.

Multilateralism forms the cornerstone of the global order that had been established after World War II in favor of liberalism and progressivism across borders and regions worldwide. This approach has played an important role in upholding peace and stability while advancing economic growth and tackling shared challenges like climate change and terrorism. Today’s world stage reflects a significant challenge to multilateralism due to the surge of nationalist interests steering countries, towards protectionist policies and diminishing collective global cooperation.

Organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) have been leading the way in such endeavors. The UN has been dedicated to promoting peacekeeping missions and advancing rights and development through its diverse programs and projects. The WTO has been instrumental in promoting trade and settling disputes, between nations. Being part of these organizations allowed me to lead and promote global multilateralism and global cooperation; particularly when I served on the WTO Panel on Defining the Future of Trade and when I lead the UN Global Alliance for ICT and Development.

The world economy is closely linked. The issues we encounter from economic disparity to environmental changes go beyond national boundaries. We can tackle these challenges better through multilateralism by sharing the responsibilities and cooperating to common challenges.

The upcoming United Nations Summit of the Future set for September 2024, offers a chance to enhance collaboration among nations worldwide. Its objective is to promote peace, sustainable development and human rights while offering a stage for countries to reiterate their dedication to these common objectives. This event offers an opportunity for the global community to unite to tackle global issues and establish the foundation for a stronger and more collaborative global framework.

Efforts to breathe life into multilateralism effective systems and structures should be bolstered while those that are not should be reformed. This requires not just making structural changes, but also a fresh dedication to the values of global collaboration and unity. The upcoming UN Summit holds a pivotal moment to enhance collective actions, in peace efforts sustainable progress and human rights issues

In this century-full of challenges, it is evident that we require a strong and rejuvenated multilateral structure. Collaborating within frameworks enables us to tackle urgent issues and shape a fairer and enduring world for all. It is crucial that we grasp this opportunity to reconfirm our dedication to multilateralism and uphold its significance as a fundamental aspect of global governance.
