Abu-Ghazaleh Shares Insights of Senior American Analyst on the 2020 US Election

15 Sep 2022 Abu-Ghazaleh Shares Insights of Senior American Analyst on the 2020 US Election
AMMAN - HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, founder and chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global (TAG.Global) shared the analysis of Mr. Bruce Stokes, senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the United States in reference to the recently held US election.
According to Stokes, the 2020 US election saw Trump spend $635.8 million and Joe Biden spent $842.3 million; a record in election advertising spending. Their respective campaigns together brought in 66.4% of the eligible voter population, which is the highest voter turnout since 1900. US voters seem to have dramatically changed in attitude towards the role of the federal government and want federal help to deal with the consequences of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Commenting on this, Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh said, “This has been one of the most challenging elections in the history of the United States. The American people are clearly divided and President Joe Biden will face many challenges in his Presidency. These are uncertain times and President Biden faces an uphill struggle to bring together the fragmented parts of the United States.”
Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh also expected that the US in the meantime will be deeply engaged in its numerous internal issues, saying that in addition to the election crisis, there is COVID-19 pandemic, where the number of people contracting the virus is rapidly increasing. That is in addition to the ongoing economic difficulties.”
According to Stokes’ analysis, post-election, the division within the US government has exacerbated further with Democrats capturing the White House, barely gaining control of the Senate and with Republicans gaining in the House of Representative and in US State governments. Biden also has the smallest democratic margin in the House of Representatives since 1943-45 and the fewest state legislative chamber switches since 1946.
Statistics indicate that Mr. Biden won 50.9% of the electoral votes and gained the future American economy by securing 21 of the 25 top US science and technology states. He won major support among coronavirus voters which was the most important voter issue; won the majority of independent women voters in the suburbs and among college plus educated white women. One reason the polls were incorrect was that one in five Trump supporters kept their vote a secret.
